The Silk Road (kinda)

Winner of the Baloney Award 2024 Written and performed by Aimee Yue Wanstead Fringe 2024 Yuji (Aimee Yue), Peking Opera’s ultimate self-sacrificial Concubine. Salome (Megan Winstanley), Oscar Wilde’s ultimate femme fatale protagonist. Two characters, separated by the West and East, find themselves in a liminal space that congratulates them on what is seemingly their only similarity — that their theatric deaths have been performed ten thousand times. And on this occasion, they are offered a once in a life (or death) time opportunity—to be freed from their roles, and to start over outside their existence in their respective plays. But what should be an obvious choice comes with an obstacle neither of them expects—if they let go of the roles that brought them eternal fame, who are they then? Identity and womanhood meet the likes of Victorian fans, etiquette, Peking Opera silks and masks in this new conversation between cultures, written and directed by Aimee Yue.
